What next?

It feels like the world's falling apart. Whenever I've looked at the news, for so long now I can no longer remember when it started feeling like this, it's felt like that. And last night it felt even more so. Arguably, this was even more terrifying than 9/11, because things like opening fire in restaurants makes it feel like if you're in the city under the terrorist attack, you aren't safe *anywhere* in it. And even if you're not in that particular city, well, what if your own is next? I have to go back into work on Monday, and I work in the bloody *Pentagon.* Granted, it's harder to attack anyone in there unless you're an employee or can otherwise get in, but, well, it happened in the Navy Yard.
Except, of course, that horrible tragedies which kill people are already happening bloody everywhere; Paris is merely the location the west will obsess over. There's also Beirut, and Kenya, and Japan, and Mexico. And now today there's South Korea too; turns out it's not just the U.S. where if the terrorists aren't murdering people, the police are doing it instead. You can't even blame them all on ISIS(and I'm still hesitant about just taking their word for it that they did it until we get some real evidence of that). It's all of humanity, getting each other killed, and at this point to we just have to hope it has an outcome other than the whole lot of us dead?

Re: The Naval Yard. I work for a government contractor, in administrative security. (I've probably mentioned that before, but just in case I haven't, it's relative to my point.) Our physical security force is largely unarmed; they carry mace. The only armed individual on campus is our on-site NCIS agent. We've reached out to County and State Police, asking for a presence to be on campus (we'd be paying them OT to work their off hours). We just recently introduced an active shooter prep guide, and ran a lock-down drill. The reaction of the staff? The majority are annoyed, or even amused. "That will never happen here." And yet, every time something like this happens--just for a moment, they stop complaining about bag checks and all of the other rules. But give it a week, and we're back to being the bad guys.

Yes, it seems frightening to see how unsafe the world has become. Only a week ago I was in Paris near the same site where some of the shootings happened, so reading about the atrocities commited feels unreal. It has not been 'safe' anywhere for a long time, for much longer than 9/11. Nevertheless, there is no option but to go out and continue to live, and meet people worth meeting, see sights worth seeing, hug your friends and continue on a daily basis.

*hugs you muchly*
