Finally figured out the last sentence for this one this morning.

Title: All Five

Fandom: Star Wars
Characters: Qui-Gon, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Mace, Padme

Warning: A little more Palpatiness
Note: Sequel to "Growing Up in the Jedi Temple."

For the second morning in a row, the two of them went to have firstmeal in Obi-Wan's quarters. )

Yesterday I ended up having two conversations with my mother about Obi-Wan Kenobi and how trustworthy he had been in the original trilogy. Apparently she felt the need to compare him to Alec Guinness' character from David Lean's A Passage to India. So I ended up having to explain about how he hadn't told the young hero everything and even about his saying he'd told the truth "from a certain point of view," which mom was as unimpressed with as most are. She wasn't too impressed on hearing about Luke's other mentor saying he hadn't been ready for the burden of the truth either. At least she more or less understood everything. Sometimes a story relying on heavily-used tropes has its good points.
Lots of nifty Critical Role things today, but I'm focused on the thing we already knew was coming tomorrow. Back when I first heard that Call of the Netherdeep was going to start in Xhorhas, I knew immediately I wanted to play it as Schist; it's an obviously way to play her again. I kind of want to play it in person, too, though I'm not sure where I'm going to find a group specifically for that.

Yesterday started, in between some Nebelhorn Trophy watching, with my tuning into the first episode of Star Wars Visions. And wow, I did not realize how badly we all needed a proper Japanese Samurai short set in the Star Wars galaxy. But more than that, I did not realize few times we've truly gotten to see a corner of said galaxy we'd never seen before. Certainly not in the movies, where it's all Western-style societies and Western-style takes on "exotic" societies. The franchise owed Japan this anyway, given how much of their cultural stuff Lucas took, but now I want more seasons, with filmmakers from other parts of the world too. I want to see what they'd do with the galaxy.
Mom and I watched the first half hour of Mighty Vibes together over dinner; she'd seen a little of the last episode and said she liked it. She enjoyed this one, too, even though I had to explain a number of things to her and even then I'm not sure how much she understood. She got that it was two siblings keeping each other company, and that might have been all. After dinner, I then finished watching on my computer so I could properly examine every corner of that delightful Easter egg basket, and revel in the fact that this show has now officially endorsed and contributed to the notion of a Vox Machina college AU.
This morning, meanwhile, I finally finished episode 48. I'd seen the big thing already... )

Title: All Five
Part: 16: An Odd Request
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13, Part 14, Part 15)
Fandom: Star Wars

The rest of that day was dull, and therefore, long. )

Come From Away was definitely the best thing I'm likely to see, this holiday week. I'd known the story about the planes diverted to Gander on 9/11 already, if only because of the extended piece NBC did on it during the 2010 Olympics. But this musical, a nonstop whole to the point it forewent an intermission, was what truly captured the people, place, and time, and all the complicated feelings that came with them. The music itself had a handful of high points, including "Me and the Sky," sung by a barrier-breaking female pilot who happened to be flying one of the planes involved. I'd seen it quoted on Tumblr already, but now I want to listen through it again.
I went into Rise of Skywalker somewhat spoiled, and my expectations not very high. For the most part, I actually enjoyed it... )
Since I had today off, this morning I went on YouTube and found Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, which I watched every year as a kid, and wanted to watch again in honor of Carroll Spinney. I found it does more than just hold up; there were things I only got as an adult, and I think I might even find it more heartwarming than I used to. And you're definitely never too old to love the music.
The Christmas movie tomorrow will be the new Little Women, which certainly has a promising cast. Mom also wants to see Cats. She's heard what's wrong with it, but I don't think she fully appreciates what we'd be in for. Even so I kind of want to see Judi Dench and Ian McKellen in it...maybe we should just buy the soundtrack?

Having finished watching Relics and Rarities while I was in New York, I've now started rewatching the first episode, which I understand much better than I did the first time around. I want to rewatch the Charlie Cox episode for the same reason. Having reached the cliffhanger, I also really want the second season, although I know at least one of the cast members is signed on for something else, so we'll probably have to wait to see when everyone's available.
I've now started reading Ashoka, which so far I'm not enjoying as much as I did Queen's Shadow, though I'm not entirely sure why; it seems well-written enough so far, with good characterization of Ashoka at time she was in transition from becoming the Padawan to becoming the rebel leader. I've just reached the point where the Empire shows up, so I'll see how I feel about that.

Queen's Shadow is proving a much quicker read than Corinne; I finished the third part of it this morning. I'm enjoying it very much, and quite like the Naboo, the Padme, and the handmaidens that EK Johnston has crafted out of the remaining canonical sources, even if it contradicts so much of what has come before. It will probably drastically alter what I write in my own stories about the handmaidens, even though making that completely compliant with the new canon will truly be impossible. The plot seems a bit loose, and generally secondary to the character studying; my mother would call it a piece of woman's fiction indeed.
Watching the French Open yesterday, I was deeply impressed with both Ash Barty and Dominic Thiem, though of course I've seen the latter plenty lately. Also Amanda Anisimova, though those who have watched American tennis these past ten years will know well her true test is only just beginning; she'll be another young blonde North American girl hyped to death, and the question is whether she has the ability to survive that. Thiem meanwhile might have done his big achievement for the year, because I don't think he's beating Rafa today, but even is that doesn't happen yet, it may still happen sooner than anyone expects.

While reviewing last year's output back on the 31st, I observed I opened last year with a part of "All Five. Looks like I'm now doing that again.

Just finished watching Star Wars: Rebels. The last episodes did get a little carried away into the mystical, but I like that they ended where they began. It feels kind of strange to think it over. At 8:30, I was sort of dulled on it and just wanted to have done with it, but now I'm sad to see it go.
Trying to figure out when I am going to watch Jessica Jones. I'd like to get through it before I head off to Milan for Worlds on the 15th, but I don't know when I'm going to find the time when Junior Worlds is that weekend, and also, my date was rescheduled for that Sunday. Plus now we're taking a side trip into Germany, and haven't booked the trains for that yet. I suspect I may not watch much of Indian Wells.
Watched the Oscars last night. I really do need to see The Shape of Water at some point. Also enjoyed Adam and Mirai on the red carpet, of course.

Saw The Last Jedi yesterday. Managed to be mostly unspoiled, which was a good thing, but my main thought was that this film had a hell of a lot more imagination than any of the films that came before it.
In both plot and settings... )

I might be on a bit of a Star Wars: Rebels kick right now. It was kind of exciting, Monday night, seeing the characters at Yavin IV and all that. Even when we already got that last year from Rogue One, it still hits you harder than you expected. Also, some of the promotional material I've seen for next week since. Most notably, of course, this. Of course, for most of the time I've been watching this show, I've been assuming Kanan and Hera were just quietly involved behind closed doors. I suppose this clip keeps that theory perfectly plausible, but who knows what they'll finally say about it in the full episode. It would be quite sad if it was declared they're getting together only now, and then he goes and gets killed.
Two chapters into The Book of Dust, and it's been a thrill to be back in that universe too. I've even pulled out my copy of Golden Compass, and I suspect I'm going to do a lot of rereading.
We got few enough new books into the library this week I was starting to think the end of this year's deluge of them is in sight. Except we just got details straightened out with one of our vendors which means they're now going to send us a few orders they were holding back, so...What Happened came in yesterday. Of course we had to get it, and it's good to have it, but even checking it in as arrived felt painful. I was relieved I was justified in giving that batch to our technician to catalog.

Finished this instead. And I think I might finally be ready to build up for the climax

Quiet day in the Pentagon today. Apparently there was some sort of ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial which was burdened with Trump, but I only heard about that much later. Also we didn't have our usual Monday staff meeting. I spent most of the day coping with our periodicals.
I've got a used printer cartridge sitting on my desk and no real idea of what I'm going to do with it. At one time there might have been a bin outside Staples I could have put it in, but this weekend mom and I both learned the hard was that store isn't as useful as it used to be. They expect you to ship it to someone who will recycle it, but who? Is that even safe anyway?
Have now watched half of Rogue One on Netflix, while I still can. Getting to watch through it a second time at my own pace means I get to look at all the details on the screen, all the ways in which the Star Wars universe is fully realized as a setting already existing for this movie to be placed in. Almost like a period piece in that way, although of course it contributes to the universe and its history and lore as well.
(I suppose I'll probably end up paying for Disney's new streaming service, because they'll probably create new MCU-set series for it sooner or later. But I might hold out for a bit.)

I was leading my droid along a dusty Tatooine desert road,

When along came a speeder with a hotshot flying all alone.

"If you're going to Mos Eisley, m’am, with me you can ride."

And so I took my BB1 and then we settled down inside.

He asked me if I'd ever seen a rock so dull and dry.

And I said, "Listen, kid, I've been to every planet in the sky!"

Why did HBO move their Bright Lights documentary up to a time when it would conflict directly with the mid-season premiere of Star Wars: Rebels? I would've liked the have properly watched the former, but the latter took priority. It was a good premiere, too, even if the dialogue fell victim to being aimed at the younger age bracket near its end. It's also a new comfort when watching to know for a fact that Hera, Chopper, and the Ghost at least will survive to see the events of Rogue One, although I'm still not sure whether they survive the events of that movie or not.
Unnerved by the latest behavior of Congress. Of course they were going to target government employees, and nobody's even going to call them out for the racism of doing so. And I'm not even attached to anything that offends them too much, since most of them don't seem to even notice libraries. But what if they go after every federal employee who ever made a liberal tweet in their lives? Also over WikiLeaks' latest threat. My sister's a verified user on Twitter; they'd go after her. They too I knew to be bad news, even when the rest of the left supported them. You always view these people differently when yours is the name they might leak, especially if you never did much significant in your life.
