This is going to be a hard year. It might actually be a less depressing one, if we can swing hard enough, but the most dangerous blows are probably yet to come. So let us start it with a little tale about mass atrocity and extreme times bringing out the best in normally less than good people.

I got to the Pentagon yesterday to find the flags at the top of the pole, which left me mildly surprised, and others in my office absolutely livid. For my own part, I find it hard to forgive John McCain for the sins of his final years, though I suppose there's no point in being angry at a dead man, especially when we've got so many living ones to be much more enraged at. Still, I put our latest on him that arrived last week into the New Arrivals box, and I sympathize.
Then I came home and finished writing a ficlet centered around one of the most disturbing POVs I've ever written.
