Dec. 18th, 2017 10:00 pmSaw The Last Jedi yesterday. Managed to be mostly unspoiled, which was a good thing, but my main thought was that this film had a hell of a lot more imagination than any of the films that came before it.
The plot, for one thing, was certainly no retread, even if parts of it had echoes of plot points from the original trilogy. Not to mention all the twists. But also, all the thought that went into the planetary settings, the general politics of the galaxy, and even the flora and fauna. Yeah, that whole sequence on the casino planet went on a little long, but it was worth it just to see them wreck the war profiteers' paradise.
(It seems the animals have been important in the Star Wars franchise lately, what with the role they've recently played on Rebels as well. Well, all living things generate the Force, right?)
And while I could've done without much of the Reylo, at least it ended right. In fact, I am taking the whole thing as a harsh lesson Rey had to learn, and maybe a little symbolic of how lately here on Earth certain people have spent too much time trying to get the emo white boys to change their ways when they won't. (I love, too, that the Resistance is so heavily female. Because of course it is.)
I do have some regrets, especially that Leia ended up going so underused-it probably would've been fine had she gotten her chance to more properly shine in the last movie, but, of course, now she's not going to. But all in all? This was the best one Disney's put out so far.
