A little good watching
Sep. 25th, 2021 03:13 pmYesterday started, in between some Nebelhorn Trophy watching, with my tuning into the first episode of Star Wars Visions. And wow, I did not realize how badly we all needed a proper Japanese Samurai short set in the Star Wars galaxy. But more than that, I did not realize few times we've truly gotten to see a corner of said galaxy we'd never seen before. Certainly not in the movies, where it's all Western-style societies and Western-style takes on "exotic" societies. The franchise owed Japan this anyway, given how much of their cultural stuff Lucas took, but now I want more seasons, with filmmakers from other parts of the world too. I want to see what they'd do with the galaxy.
Mom and I watched the first half hour of Mighty Vibes together over dinner; she'd seen a little of the last episode and said she liked it. She enjoyed this one, too, even though I had to explain a number of things to her and even then I'm not sure how much she understood. She got that it was two siblings keeping each other company, and that might have been all. After dinner, I then finished watching on my computer so I could properly examine every corner of that delightful Easter egg basket, and revel in the fact that this show has now officially endorsed and contributed to the notion of a Vox Machina college AU.
This morning, meanwhile, I finally finished episode 48. I'd already watched Nott's reunion with her son/big reveal, and I think everyone's heard about the chair and "Your people did this," but seeing it all put together was something else entirely. I can only wonder what it was like for those who watched it live, since by the time they left that basement it was clear Nott had left a lot out of her past, but the reveal being what it was still floored everyone. Instead I was marveling at the work Sam did there, with Matt perfectly lining everything up for him.
You can also see how much the characters have now come to care for each other and understand what's important. Not long before this they would've barraged Nott with questions the minute she asked for her son, but now they understood she needed things taken care of before she was ready for that, and were helpful even without quite knowing what the hells was going on.
