Thank you to everyone who participated! You're now free to post your entries to your journal or wherever else you'd like. If you're archiving on AO3, you can add your work to our fan_flashworks collection there.

The Community Report and Creator Report will be updated shortly with the entries from this round. See our FAQ for more details.

In September, when we announced the new reports, we confirmed our plan to wait a couple of months and then remove the challenge tags from the comm. That time is drawing near.

This is a reminder that on January 1, 2026, the challenge tags will be going away.

Next challenge coming right up.

So I may have been a little...over ambitious in purchasing eggs and butter and expecting it all to fit into my tiny apartment-size fridge. I did get all of it in there, but there was literally no room to let orange rolls rise overnight so I knocked that off the list. Maybe I will do them for New Year's morning instead.

I also had an unfortunate start to the fig cookies. I made the filling yesterday and I might have put too much cocoa in as I thought it was the bottom of the container so I just dumped it in and well, there was more than I expected in there. *hands* It's fine. Then when I made the dough earlier, it smelled weird. I think maybe the Crisco had gone off? Idk, but I threw out what I'd made and did it again with the newly opened can of Crisco and it smelled correct, so I didn't really get to make cookies this afternoon as planned, but I might make some after dinner, which is how we did it when I was a kid - every night for the 2 weeks before Christmas we were in the kitchen making fig cookies.

I did marinate the pork country ribs last night and they are now in the oven roasting, so that at least is on track.

I also watched Wake Up Dead Man yesterday, and I liked but didn't love it? I'm not sure why? spoilers )

This is a long essay about the movie (spoilers, obvs) that goes much deeper into it: Entirely Too Many Thoughts About Wake Up Dead Man by Leah Schnelbach.

Oh, the timer just went off so I have to take the ribs out of the oven, so I guess I'll just hit post!

So, I finally managed to get around to watch Ncuti Gatwa's second Doctor Who season1, and I think the fact that I actually managed to watch it already says a lot, even if I had to do embroidery while I did it.2

Non-spoilery review: There were parts that I really enjoyed, and which felt more like the Doctor Who that I love than anything in years, but this also had pretty much every single thing that I hated about RTDs first run.

The future of the Marvel universe, I don't think it is set, I don't think it should be set. I think you can have a bunch of different ones. To be honest, it's sort of nice to have a few futures that are very probable, like the Days of Future Past or like King Thor... -- Al Ewing

fanlore-wiki:

The background is collage of torn scrapbook paper and stickers. On the right is a an image of Merida sitting with her bow, Rapunzel with her frying pan standing next to Hiccup, and Jack Frost above them crouched on top of his staff.. Text reads 'Featured Article, Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons'ALT

Today’s Featured Article is Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragons! This fandom crosses over the animated movies Rise of the Guardians, Brave, Tangled, and How to Train Your Dragon.

After its start in late 2012, the fandom may have grown in popularity due to the films’ parallels. The main crossover cast is often called “The Big Four”, while characters from other animated movies—such as Hotel Transylvania, The Lorax, and Frozen—occasionally join them.

The Big Four have no canonical interactions as a group. Still, that hasn’t hindered the manips and other fanworks that bring them together. They are frequently depicted as Guardians of Childhood and seasonal spirits, taking from Jack Frost’s canonical role as a winter spirit and Guardian of Fun in Rise of the Guardians. Prevalent ships include Jack Frost/Rapunzel, Merida/Hiccup, and more recently, Hiccup/Jack Frost. Although the fandom peaked in popularity around the mid-2010s, it continues to host new activity and fanworks.

DO NOT FEAR

But as he [Joseph] considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you shall call His Name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and they shall call His Name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:20-23)

The angel says, “Do not fear to take Mary as your wife.” Joseph had good reason to be afraid before the angel came to him. At that point, he still thought Mary was pregnant by another man. And if Joseph had gone ahead and married her under those circumstances, what kind of a life would he have had with a woman whose heart was elsewhere?

But God sees the problem and deals with it openly in His message to Joseph. God always does see the problems that we face—even the ones that seem too sordid or too embarrassing to confess to anybody else. And in His kindness, He deals with them—even when it means coming down to earth as our Savior, to give His life and to rise from the dead for our sake. Nothing and no one is too low for Him to love and to rescue.

WE PRAY: Dear Savior, thank You for noticing me and my problems, too. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do you have embarrassing worries and problems?
  • Do you ever hesitate to bring them up when you’re praying and asking God for help?
  • How does it make you feel to know that Jesus has already noticed your problems and is finding ways to help you?

“What’s so tragic about [Doom] is that he could be a great guy. If he went in a slightly different direction, he could be a good guy. That’s why he and Reed have such a Capital R relationship. They see themselves as these sort of very similar but very different men.” — Ryan North

1. My colleague Michael D.C. Drout on why The Lord of the Rings endures with readers. (If you don't have access to the NY Times, this link might get you there.) The essay takes a startling personal turn that may surprise readers who don't know Mike, but in the process it also reveals some of why Tolkien is such a moving and effective author. (And some of it is based on the lexomic analysis in the article Mike co-authored in the latest issue of Tolkien Studies.) It's a sad and beautiful article, like Tolkien's work itself.

2. What has become of NASA? Joel Achenbach's deep dive into the recent history and current state of the agency that's been mooting return flights to the Moon and also to Mars, and why it's not likely to happen, told with a clarity not always granted to such articles.

3. The angriest and hence best response to the thing that took to the airwaves to yell at America.

Weekend Plans

Okay, let's figure out my plans for the weekend, shall we?

All of my big bills (hotel, storage unit, phone, PO Box) have already been paid, so unless something very unexpected happens I don't have to worry about any major expenses the rest of the year other than a vet bill on the 29th. So that's definitely something to be happy about, as it means I can focus on other things this weekend.

I think my plan is to get up tomorrow morning and do my usual weekend cleaning. That way, I can get all of those things done first thing. I'll wash clothes, do some vacuuming/dusting/mopping/etc., and then hopefully by mid-afternoon I'll be free to work on other things.

By which I mainly mean writing as many fics for Yuletide as I possibly can, to be fair. That said, I still need to watch this week episode of both The Mighty Nein and Critical Role, so I'd like to get that done tomorrow as well.

That way I can spend pretty much all of Sunday writing. 🤞🏻

A lot of people still are like, "Oh, Jo's the Green Lantern, but she's only in it a little bit with all this large ensemble cast that keeps expanding." [...] Jo's not the Green Lantern. Jo has the green power. There's a difference. The Green Lantern is that big thing that's currently on the moon. Nobody knows what the hell it is. That's the Green Lantern. That's what the book's about. -- Al Ewing
