a movie called Wanda

John Scalzi's 'comfort watch' for yesterday was A Fish Called Wanda. I find I have some thoughts about that movie:

I agree with Scalzi that it's a fabulously funny movie, which I enjoyed tremendously on first watching. And for a long time afterwards, too, but on more recent rewatches I've found myself enjoying it somewhat less. (Except for Otto, a character so terminally stupid and fearlessly portrayed by Kevin Kline that way, that this still works.)

What I'm finding less appealing is what Scalzi calls the 'cringe humor.' Normally, like him, I dislike humor relying on embarrassing sympathetic characters, but Wanda was funny enough to immunize itself against this. But maybe as I've gotten more used to the scenario, the immunity wears off.

Scalzi mentions a couple forms of humor that probably wouldn't pass muster in a film made today. One is what he calls casual homophobia. I don't think that Otto trying to disconcert Ken by pretending to be sexually attracted to him is actually homophobic as the term is normally used. Ken isn't being repulsed at the existence of homosexuals, just at being propositioned himself. He's not shown as homophobic, just as emphatically not homosexual himself.

The line that Otto steps across is that of verbal sexual harassment, and that's objectionable regardless of the sexual orientation of anyone involved. If Otto were to treat a woman that way, it'd be perfectly understandable for her being as uncomfortable with it as Ken is.

The other problematic source of humor is Ken's stutter. Here again it's not that simple. The character who mocks Ken is Otto, and that's part of showing what a nasty and unsympathetic person Otto is. Wanda and George are comfortable dealing with Ken, whose stutter is less severe when talking with them - obviously it becomes stronger under stress.

Which leaves the encounter between Ken and Archie, when they're both frantic and accordingly Ken's stutter becomes very severe. It seems to me the source of humor here is not the stutter but Archie's frustration in dealing with it (his impatience, while understandable, is a flaw in his character). But I shouldn't be surprised if those with stutters disagree about that.

Scalzi says to ignore the plot, but there's a plot problem with the movie that weighs on me more over time. The reason Wanda seduces Archie is because Archie is George's lawyer and might know where George has hidden the diamonds. Perhaps it's Wanda's unfamiliarity, as an American, with the British legal system that trips her up here, because, as the barrister, Archie is merely a hired hand; he has little direct contact with George and is not in his confidence. The person who is in George's confidence is his solicitor, who is George's actual lawyer in the normal sense, and he does know about the diamonds, as is shown by his passing secret messages between George and Ken. It's the solicitor, not the barrister, whom Wanda should have seduced, but the solicitor is a minor character and, unlike Archie, he's not sexy, so there'd be no movie there.

JOSEPH THE DREAMER

When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a Son. And he called His Name Jesus. (Matthew 1:24-25)

It interests me that God communicates with Joseph purely through dreams. It’s maybe not surprising, though, since Joseph is named after the man in Genesis 37-50 who had dreams from God—and God used him to rescue the whole family of Israel from famine.

God used the Old Testament Joseph to rescue a whole country—and foreigners, too!—since he was in charge of all the grain of Egypt. By contrast, Joseph in the New Testament is caring for a single mother and her baby, which might not seem like much. But this baby is Jesus, who is the Bread of Life—and through His life, death, and resurrection, He will save the entire world.

As He tells us, “I am the living Bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever” (John 6:51a). No one who trusts in Jesus will ever be destroyed.

WE PRAY: Lord Jesus, Your Name means “God is salvation,” and that’s what You are to me. Thank You. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  • What does your name mean? Are you named after anyone?
  • Why is Jesus’ Name appropriate for Him?
  • How do we “eat” the Bread of Life that Jesus gives us?

Yes, I'm well aware what time it is. I couldn't sleep, though, so I figured I might as well accomplish something while I was wide awake at 3am.

doranwen: the last five lines of an Archibald Lampman poem called Snow (The world seems shrouded)
[personal profile] doranwen posting in [community profile] holiday_wishes
I'm so late with posting - have been utterly swamped by life and projects in the past few weeks. It's been exciting seeing all your wishlists come in and I hope I can find a few minutes to check out some and see if there's anything I can contribute.

This year I don't have a ton of things to wish for:

1. Volunteer to help with the Yahoo Groups (Fandom) Rescue Project. It's a massive project but it would be so neat to get it all done, and 100 good volunteers would do it. Other than anime in general (some specific fandoms not counted there) and a few tiny things, most areas are still open for tagging (everything from genealogy to bands to alumni groups to every fandom under the sun that existed before 2019). All you need is time, the ability to use Google Sheets, and the ability to be careful with details. If you can't do one of those, maybe you know someone who could and might be interested in helping? Just tell them about the project, perhaps? :)

2. Old educational software (game or not) for Windows you don't want or can't use: (But definitely ask me first, in case I already have it and you'd be wasting your time/money to send them here.) I'm taking old computers people can't use or don't want, putting Linux on them, and configuring them to be useful for a local school or low-income families. If the computers are relatively new enough (like Windows 10, as opposed to Windows XP or 7) I can install a software program called Lutris which acts as a one-stop game/program launcher for games from a number of sources - not only modern Linux ones, but modern Windows games, DOS, Amiga, and my favorite - old games (generally abandonware at this point) that ran on Windows 3.1/95/98. It's easier to run them on Linux now than Windows, and I've been figuring out how to create Lutris installer scripts for many games to make it easy for others. So if you find you have CDs of educational software/games from that era which are buggy or just don't run on your Windows 10/11 computer, and you want to get rid of them, I'm happy to be the destination for them.

3. Donate older-but-still-usable electronics to organizations that can make them useful. I love seeing computers revitalized with Linux. While I'm sure you're too far from me to donate any to my project (anyone in western WA state? lol), there are organizations in many locations that will refurbish and make older computers useful. (Though I maintain that to really make use of old hardware you have to switch away from Windows - which is far more resource-hungry than most Linux distros. I don't know how many organizations consider that one, lol.)

4. Write me a fanfic! You can find my fanfic exchange letters here.
Fandom list (going back to 2019 as far as the exchange letters go): 1-800-Missing (TV), Alphas, C-16: FBI, Cybergeddon, Earth Girl, Gold Diggers (1996), Law & Order: SVU, Leverage, Lois & Clark:TNAOS, Profiler, Push (2009), Rizzoli & Isles, Rookie Blue, Smallville, Sue Thomas F.B.Eye, The Pretender, Tomorrow When the War Began (2010), Women's Murder Club (TV), Worldweavers, X-Men original timeline movies

I'm not currently interested in receiving Matrix fic, and haven't watched past S3 of FBI and S2 of FBI: Most Wanted, so although you'll find those in the exchange letters, it's probably best to stay clear of those (unless you think you can write a spoiler-free FBI or FBI MW fic). And I know this is very, very late to ask for a fic, and I absolutely don't expect one by Christmas or New Year's or anything like that - but you will honestly make me happy *any* time of the year if you write me a fic, so if this is something you think you can do, please don't worry about timeframes. :) (Use the DNW list from the most recent letter or letters if you do.)

5. Obligatory Amazon wishlist: Here
I'm always good with used books, and for CDs/DVDs I just want them in nice enough condition that they aren't scratched.

6. Music instruments: This one I don't expect to ever receive, but I'm wishing anyway. Should you come across a spare musical instrument, I can put it to good use. Either by playing it myself (pretty much anything stringed I'm good with) or by giving it to someone else who can't afford an instrument but who has talent and desire to play.

7. Code me the program I've dreamed of. This one's just as unlikely as the last, lol. I've learned some programming skills but I don't have the time to learn more, and I would have to be mentored through creating this program specifically anyway, lol. Some years ago I created a 14-page outline of a music player that I would love - and there isn't a single program out there that even comes CLOSE to having the features I want (multi-genre labeling and filtering without interacting with the actual files' tags, for instance). I run Linux Mint as my main OS and would want anything I use to run on Linux natively.

If you're going the route of mailing me directly (such as for wishes #2 or #6, or if you have a personal copy of something on my Amazon wishlist that you want to send), PM me for my address.

Last time I got the chance to hang out with [personal profile] raven, about a year ago -- there would have been another time recently but, alas!, airline crimes interfered -- I ended up with two books shoved into my hands: Mavis Doriel Hay's Murder Underground and Death on the Cherwell.

I was not particularly familiar with Hay's game before this; she falls squarely in the Golden Age but only ever published three novels before focusing all her attention on Rural British Handicrafts. [personal profile] raven is right however that these books are both very fun and worthy of attention for their structure: neither of them have a kind of traditional primary detective figure, and both of them instead focus on a group of people in the murder victim's broader community who sort of collectively solve the crime by bouncing against each other in various directions until the right information comes to light.

In Murder Underground, the unloved landlady of a boarding house is found murdered on the subway, and her Bertie Wooster of a nephew promptly bumbles his way all over the crime scene and makes himself prime suspect number one (Dorothy Sayers, in her review, called this man one of the most feckless, exasperating and lifelike literary men that ever confused a trail and I couldn't put it better! god bless!) We spend a good chunk of the book following the Feckless Nephew and another good chunk just hanging out with the people who live in the boarding house, all of whom have Opinions, Mostly Incorrect.

Death on the Cherwell has some returning characters from Murder Underground but mostly focuses on a group of Young Lady Students who have been having an inaugural meeting for their we-hate-and-curse-our-bursar club when they happen to see said bursar floating down the river in a boat, presumably pre-cursed because she's very obviously dead. The police detective on the case has more to do in this one but the charm of the book is all in the Young Lady Students bopping around trying to investigate on their own, annoying various of their friends and relations in the process.

Hay has also written a third book that I've not yet read and I'm curious to see if it leans as much as these two into the ensemble and the way that a whole community can become stakeholders in A Murder Problem. In the meantime, [personal profile] raven has encouraged me to pass these along to another good home if anyone else would like them! ETA and they are CLAIMED

(As always when reading Golden Age mysteries one is inevitably going to run into some classic Golden Age racism, and in this case it would be remiss of me not to mention that Death on the Cherwell has some opinions about Eastern Europe ... ah, those excitable Yugoslavians! A Yugoslavian Young Lady Student MIGHT declare blood feud against one of her admins. Who Could Say. We Just Don't Know.)

Our new challenge is our eighty-third:

AMNESTY

During amnesty challenges, you can post works for any of the challenges we've had to date: Complete list of prompts )

See the Community Report for a sortable list of prompts.
Both reports have a random "Any Challenge" button, and the Creator Report also has a random "Unfilled Challenge" button.

Of course, you're always welcome to post multiple works to any challenge if you finish them before the challenge closes, but that isn't always possible. So dust off those unfinished works and half-formed ideas -- now is the time!

In amnesty rounds, include the challenge you are posting for in the subject line of your post (eg, Blanket: Heated Rivalry: Fanart: If on a winter's night).

Each work created for this challenge should be posted as a new entry to the comm. Posting starts now and continues up until the challenge ends at 4pm Pacific Time on Thursday, 1 January. No sign-up required.

Mods will tag your work with fandom, media and challenge. When you've posted entries to three consecutive challenges, you will earn a name tag, and we'll go back and tag all your previous entries with your name.

All kinds of fanworks in all fandoms are welcome. Please have a look at our guidelines before you play. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact a mod. And if you have any suggestions for future challenges, you can leave them in the comments of this post.

You can view stats for [community profile] fan_flashworks entries and search and filter them via the Community Report and Creator Report. See our FAQ post for more details. Please let us know if you have any trouble accessing the reports.

In September, when we announced the new reports, we confirmed our plan to wait a couple of months and then remove the challenge tags from the comm. That time is drawing near.

This is a reminder that on January 1, 2026, the challenge tags will be going away.

Also, keep an eye out for the next [community profile] ffw_social post, which will go up in the next couple of days. If you haven't joined the comm yet, it's never too late to come and check it out. (Remember, posts are locked, which means you have to join to see them.)
