Life Without an Available Car
Feb. 24th, 2014 10:00 pmIt has now been a couple of weeks since my mother was notified of the suspension of her license by the DMV, who ignored everything written by her doctors that she had not had a seizure and so was in no danger of having more, and have prohibited her from driving until at least May. She's wondered if maybe she should move back to New York, where she wouldn't need to drive. But that's not easy to do, and meanwhile we can survive in our current location without a car. Just not that easily.
We bought a NYC-style shopping cart online, though we're not sure how much weight it can handle, and so far we've eschewed using in favor of ordering our groceries to be delivered. Tonight they were extremely late in arriving, causing much stress. And she couldn't order alcohol; when my sister visited yesterday she drove us multiple places, so we could buy that, as well as bananas and tomatoes, since we weren't so sure about having fresh produce delivered.
At least this is causing her to learn the bus routes, especially since she can't really manage to walk to and from the metro stop the way I can. Ironically it may be easier to get to places in DC now than to closer places
