I watched the final episode of Cowboy Bebop on Hulu this week, years after I watched the first episode on Crunchyroll, many years after my first roommate in undergrad showed me the opening sequence, but none of any of the actual episodes, and my music collection ultimately ended up including both that famous opening theme and what I learned this week was the final piece of music of the series, played over the credits of the final episode-and I will never feel the same way about the latter piece again. It's been the kind of experience where watching that moment of Julia being fatally shot made me flash back to watching the animation of Vex being hit by that fatal wave of necrotic energy-and given who made the latter show, and even she who dubbed Julia being the voice director, they no doubt based that moment off the original. Even when I didn't recognize direct influences, the entire time watching knowing how iconic the series has been, and certainly understanding why.
I actually managed to avoid spoilers for any of the big things until I'd safely seen them, and as a result, now that I know it ends with Spike's death, the rest of the series suddenly feels different and much more bittersweet than it did when I first watched. I might even need to watch again, although I haven't seen the movie. Maybe watch a little bit of the dub, if only to hear Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's take on Julia.
I'm also left to eternally wonder what happened to Jet and Faye. Did they fly off together by themselves, or go their separate ways? I suppose we may not be meant to know.
