For the past week, mom and I have anxiously been watching Clarissa, who is showing a limp in her walk, and has been inconsistent in her eating and drinking. She's 15 now, which makes her an old cat. When mom took her to the vet, they couldn't find anything wrong with her. We think she might have suffered a stroke; the vet didn't check for that because it's not entirely safe for a cat to receive a brain scan. Which runs the risk of another, more fatal one, but there's not much we can do about that. We're going to try to keep her alive for as long as we can, and she may yet last years.
My sister and her husband might not have been so lucky with their own ailing cat. Three-year-old Max has been taken to the vet for kidney problems, and at one point even had a little catheter put in him, which cost them thousands. But it looks like his issues are such that to keep him alive will likely cost more money than they have available. They've buried multiple cats now, but all of them were much older than that.
We might not have been hit with any tornadoes, but the wind last night did get scarily loud, with the power even blinking a bit. There's still a little bit of wind outside right now.
ETA: I have just heard Max does not have a problem with his kidneys after all. In fact, his main problem right now seems to be the other cats no longer recognize him (his smell got fucked up at the vet, probably), and have turned hostile. Oops.
