In-person group got cancelled again. We've got a guy with a family issue that keeps giving him trouble on Wednesday. He even told us to meet without us this week, but we're too small a group for that. At this point we just have to hope next week will be fine, especially since, of course, the week after I'll be in New York.
Preparations for that are now underway. My sister and I have booked hotel rooms, and my badges arrived today; I just got them activated. But unfortunately, I won't be able to get my omicron booster before we go. Mom and I struggled to navigate the CVS appointment system this weekend, and Monday she instead booked appointments for us with Kaiser, but they can't get to us until the end of October. I am now debating the amount of time I'll spend on the convention floor and thinking I'm much less likely to go to any shows in NY this year.
At least I've got my Call of the Netherdeep group. We hit the road this week, after our wizard gained the Identify spell and we discovered the necklace we'd found in the cove was in fact a Vestige of Divergence. Only Schist rolled high enough to even know what that was, which felt appropriate, especially since I pretty much funneled my own excitement over it into her reaction. The DM even let me explain to the other characters what Vestiges were without further prompting, since he knew I knew very well what they were; not all the other players have seen enough of the show for that.
One thing we are all very aware of after Monday, however, is how difficult Matt truly makes his encounters. We rolled for one with a pair of Moorbounders and some unfortunate Kryn soldiers whom we sadly failed to save, during which two of our number went down, and ended the session having rolled for another scary encounter, both of which, our DM told us, are taken straight from the book, stats and all. Matt saw them as appropriate encounters for five level four characters, apparently. We speculated that he neglected to consider whether all players are as imaginative or as experience and versatile as the seven he's currently used to building for, but it's also easy to forget how even with them things have gotten truly hairy a lot of time, with us all losing count of the number of times true disaster was averted only with some very lucky rolls. (I'm also the only one in the group watching along with the current campaign, but this is definitely making me look at that whole encounter with Otohan differently.)
