This is not the first time, I must ruefully note, that I have mourned how irreversible the damage caused by a bad acquittal is in this country. Today another bastard got away with it, and he'll never not get away with it. Even if by some miracle the next guy to do this does get convicted, the first one will still be walking free. I remember it was a shock to me, when I first learned that in Europe, acquittals can be reversed on appeal same as convictions.
But, of course, if we did have that rule in this country, it's very obvious which acquittals would get reversed, and it wouldn't be ones like the one that happened today. It would probably just make things even worse.
So what do you do, really, when the system is clearly beyond repair?
