For the past week I've been attending sessions at the ALA's annual conference, once again gone virtual this year, but managing to go on longer and have far more events than last year's affair did. Although my not trying to see anything on Thursday meant I saw a good deal less than I might have otherwise. Wednesday I ended up procrastinating dealing with my laptop by watching three author speaker events in a row, including one with Candacy Taylor where she talked about the history of the Green Book and the history of African-American travel in general, which was probably the most educational thing I ended up seeing; she had a lot of things to talk about. Friday I attended some more technical/professional seminars, some of which made me feel delightfully nerdy. Saturday evening I attended a virtual meet and greet with some other federal/armed forces librarians, the kind of thing I'd be hopeless at in person. And today I watched a couple more interview sessions, including the closing one with Barack Obama.
It had been years since I'd heard him speak, and I was taken by surprise by my own reaction at seeing and hearing him again. I guess I did miss him. And what he said sounded very smart in theory, though I have my lingering doubts.
Someone at the meet and greet also claimed that right now next year's annual meeting is supposed to take place in DC again! I thought it wouldn't come back so quick after being here back in 2019. But that means I'll probably be attending for the fourth year in a row! But I think I'll be a little less intimidated by that this time around.
