One mostly sleepless night later
May. 28th, 2021 04:52 pmI admit, up until last night, I wasn't happy about The Mighty Nein ending. I respected the cast's decision, but I didn't like it. There just seemed to be too much left to do, and even more than that, I was with those who said the final battle was shaping up to be Vecna redux, which didn't really suit the story.
I do now have some idea of how those watching late in the first campaign must have felt. At the beginning of the episode, the battle felt unwinnable. As late as when Jester died, she felt like just the first to fall. But Matt knew what he was doing, and so did his players. Still, from about the moment Matt asked Laura that pivotal question, it's felt kind of unreal that they won. Though today was one day when the joy of the episode in general was a good one to have.
And in retrospect, I think we all should've paid more attention when players and characters alike talked about still wanting to rescue Molly. We should've realized the final battle wasn't going to be the point, because saving the world is all well and good, but the emotional heart of the story was always trying to save their friend. And how that ended up playing out...well, whether it was a good idea to end it here before last night is now irrelevant. Now it's the right time to end, because they've achieved the most important thing, and also, really, how could they ever top that?
Even if they obviously still have things to wrap up next week, including things I was feeling very anxious about before this. Now, however, it feels like they'll figure it out, one way or another.
