Oct. 25th, 2020 10:29 amI've started reading Henry Jenkins' Textual Poachers. Which so far as come off more as a historical text than anything else, since it was written I think even before the world wide web went public! It's been a very long time since I'd read anything with quite that much academic language either. That, I think, was part of the book's point. At the time, treating fan culture as something could be seriously studied and evaluated was in fact giving it more respect than the majority of the world did. In a world when younger fans don't even remember when we all tried to escape notice (heck, I'm older than many of my readers, and Jenkins wrote before my time), it's good to be reminded of how things were only thirty years ago. It does make for very slow going, nonetheless.
