missizzyMom is back. There was a good deal of confusion yesterday of exactly when she was returning, and I ended up going out to eat in Chinatown while I thought she was still in the air, only to emerge to anxious messages from her saying she'd arrived home and why hadn't I gotten back from work yet? And when I'd had a frustrating time trying to find some pizza, and instead discovering that getting decent pizza in DC now requires either going to ridiculous gourmet stuff, or at least making more decisions about what kind of cheese you want than I was up to at the time.
At least I got a chance to revisit the Wok and Roll, a old Chinese restaurant that has not been as harmed as I'd feared by turning to Asian fusion. It's been at the bottom of what was once the infamous Surratt boarding house, a place owned by a probable conspirator in the Lincoln assassination, for well over a decade. When I first went there, you knew only due to a news article they'd put just inside the front door. Then they put up a plaque, and now there's an information From Civil War to Civil Rights tour post on the sidewalk outside. Most of the block has small Chinese restaurants on their ground floors, but I've got a fondness for this one. They've got karaoke there now, which is new, but it was too early in the evening for it. Next time I go there, I may try to get there later.
