Apr. 17th, 2012 08:31 pmHorses races were a wash. Or, more accurately, weren't; the lack of rain has made it harder for the horses; they're racing less, and as a result the vast majority of the ones supposed to race on Sunday were scratched. For one race exactly one horse showed up; so they had his rider take him a fourteen-second short distance to the finish line to proclaim him the winner. Another race started with two horses, but something happened when they were both out of sight of just about everyone, and then only one horse ended up riding most of the course through, and arrived at the finish line to allegations of foul play. The steward was called for an official inquiry, though the results weren't announced before the end of the second of only two races that afternoon with more than three horses left, which was when we left. Though one of the three-horse races was actually kind of exciting, since two of them came to the finish neck and neck.
Got an even cooler sight at work today, though; the space shuttle Discovery was flown past our building on its way to the museum; and we all ran to the windows to see. It was close enough and low enough for us to make out the shuttle on top of the airplane carrying it. On the parking deck below I could see the people gathering to watch.
