With GIP of Meryl Davis & Charlie White. Where we left off:
Having figured the subway out better, Tuesday morning I took it to Lincoln Center, but nothing was going on there except some films, none of them beginning at a convenient time, so I got back on the subway and after an adventure where I accidentally got on the express train I got to the Natural History Museum, which seemed to consist largely of recreations of animal habitats & nature scenes; I saw African recreations, oceanic recreations, and North American forest recreations. Though I quite enjoyed their astronomy exhibit in the basement, with simulations of stars and moving galaxies. I knew by that evening if I wanted to go to a show, I had to go then, so I actually went down to the half-price booth and got in line before facing that I was exhausted and really not up to it, so I went back to the Princeton and ate overpriced(but delicious) roomservice while watching the US Open on TV.
I finally took the subway out to Flushing Meadows Wednesday. Highlights include watching the first set of Nadia Petrova's and the second set of Vavara Lepchenko's match in the new Court 17(even if Petrova's opponent wasn't playing well at all), a little more than half of the upset of Yanina Wickmayer by Pauline Parmentier, most of Sorana Cirstea & Anna Tatashvili's match(though neither were the best), trying to watch Sania Mirza and Colin Fleming play mixed doubles only to be distracted along with the rest of our viewers by the sound of Laura Robson ending Kim Clisters' career with the shock of the tournament in Ashe right behind us(almost makes me wished I'd shelled out for Ashe access), and watching the third set showndown between Marion Bartoli & one Romina Oprandi, she of a *lot* of dropshots, with both players supported by loud cheering sections. I caught some glimpses of men's matches too, but there just weren't any I found interesting in places it wouldn't take too long to get into(I didn't go into Armstrong or the Grandstand at all. Just wasn't worth it that day). Though I used the sunscreen, I made the mistake of not reapplying it to my collarbone, so I'm pretty badly burnt there.
Thursday I tried to take things easier, going down to Soho and walking down Canal Street until I hit Chinatown, where I looked for a long time for a restaurant, finally found one that served me way too much beef fried rice, took the train to the Met Art museum which was now open, and explored sections of 19th century French artistry, Mexican Native American artifacts, modern paintings, and all sorts of Japanese art, but you can't really explore the Met in only a few hours, and my stomach was acting up, so I limped back to the Princeton, watched Andy Roddick's press conference live, and only went out one last time to get something small to eat. The first two places I went to were both out of what I wanted, so I went to Sbarro's just as they ran out of pepperoni, so I just got a stromboli and walked back eating it.
Finally Friday morning I checked out, dragged my suitcase back those blocks, and despite the train spending way too much time in Union Station got home at a good hour, and have been watching skating competitions ever since. Tomorrow my work on the newscast resumes...
