More of the world is burning now
Feb. 25th, 2022 08:22 pmIf there's been one comfort this week, it's that a hell of a lot more people are seeing not only the true colors of one strongman autocrat (my mother has finally admitted I was right...), but exactly what happens when such people get into power and start to believe, rightly or otherwise, that they can't be got rid of. We're seeing that happen in Texas and Florida, too. We're even seeing the first proposals going after birth control-that's when women everywhere have to face that these men will destroy their lives.
I wish I could be more comforted by everyone fighting back-in the Ukraine, in the U.S., even in Russia, where even the mildest antiwar comments are acts of true bravery. But the terrible question lingers of how much good any of it's going to do at this point. Maybe it can keep some people alive and/or okay, for a little while longer. But so long as the current trend of the world keeps going onward, we've all of us only got so long anyway.
(It did feel good to be able to admire Evgenia Medvedeva once again. But I'm kind of terrified about what's going to happen to her, especially if other countries actually do start barring *all* Russian citizens from their borders.)
