Once upon a time, or so I've been told, the big Comic Cons, like San Diego and New York, were the big places for all the major studios to make announcements, release previews, held panels, and so on, making fans anticipate them like nothing else. But now, as my sister has noted multiple times, the biggest ones are having their own events, or taking over themed ones like Star Wars Celebration, and reserving their stuff for those. So this year, aside from some promos from smaller operations like Amazon's studios, it was something like a huge version of smaller events like DC's AwesomeCon. Thursday and Friday were also less attended than usual, though Sunday sold out after I bought, and the floor that day was so crowded I ended up fleeing it after five minutes.
Still, there was The Legend of Vox Machina, complete with two videos of what's to come and a release date at last, and we enjoyed the Wheel of Time panel as well, my sister especially, though her history with said book series is a little complicated. And I did enjoy panels on the other two days I was there too, especially one about women in fandom history from Mary Shelley onward, and make some purchases. After buying the print of Caduceus and Keyleth Friday and sitting down to rest, I got accosted by two different people asking where I'd found it! The Critical Role cosplayers were just some of the many, many characters I spotted, the most adorable probably being the Ernie and Bert, complete with masks where their names on them in big colorful letters.
Besides the convention, I also spent Saturday morning on the High Line and in Chelsea Market, got taken by my sister to a bar where they had a piano and sang along to musical numbers, and we also briefly ducked into the Met to see the exhibit on the Medici. We didn't make it to any Broadway shows, though. We were simply too tired in the evenings. She hasn't left the house much this past year in a half.
I suspect we may head back together next year. I wouldn't mind doing so, anyway.
