missizzy: (reading)
Another thing I did during my trip to Boston was finish Ashoka. It was more standard a hero's journey tale than Queen's Shadow, but a well done one, with a well-realized original society and inhabitants to play their role. Now I have begun reading Amanda Foreman's biography of Georgiana Spencer, Duchess of Devonshire. Years ago I saw the movie about her with my mother and noticed her disappointment with it, and two chapters in, I'm beginning to understand why. The real Duchess had a more complicated story, and arguably a more interesting one, than what made it to the screen, though I suspect the real story's not going to be one that would've translated well to a two and a half hour film anyway. Also, it's already looking too depressing for Hollywood.
Today I brave the heat of Old Town to see if I can find a decent purse for a non-absurd price that might last more than a year and a half down there. Mom and I went walking there last evening and looked in a couple of places that weren't closed, but the prices at one of them downright shocked her. Really, the cost of purses should shock everyone, but most of us are too used to it. No wonder women have started switching to backpacks, but I suspect it's only a matter of time that those of them not meant for schoolchildren start likewise going up in price.
