Jan. 17th, 2015 10:00 pmWent with two other women from the library to the Pentagon's 30th Annnual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Thursday, the first time I've been to the building's auditorium, which certainly has a weird location, down on the lowest floor(or at least the lowest one I know about...) and not actually that big, though it held a comfortable crowd that day. It was a good ceremony, all in all, especially because of the keynote speaker, a certain Admiral Michelle J. Howard. She is a short black woman with a lot of firsts to her name, including the first woman of any race to reach the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy, and is currently second in command of the Navy. She is also a really good speaker. We gave her a stand ovation when she was done.
Unfortunately, while trying to get back, the three of us got lost in the bowels of the Pentagon. We were trying to figure out the way back by figuring out where we were in relation to the gym, except we forgot which floor we were on, because the on entrance in use from within the building was on the floor above us, but the signs pointing to currently closed entrances were still in place. Finally we went into to the stairwell just as I was asking if we were on the right floor, prompting the guy coming down the stars to answer, "No you're not." He promptly gave us directions we didn't really understand, but when we emerged on the next floor, we recognized the corridor, and we able to get back to the library/conference center from there.
Not that it's that nice to work in that building right now. Wednesday something went wrong with the water supply, and now the water's not safe to drink. By Thursday afternoon one of the vending machines that had three racks of bottled water had emptied two of them and seemed convinced it had emptied the third as well. Fortunately the other vending machine was still supplying bottles, but I really hope the thing is fixed by Tuesday.
