Thoughts on Skating Super Saturday
Jan. 26th, 2013 08:19 pmAnd the ladies free today has yet to happen, but a chance while NBC does recapping to make a few comments:
I haven’t seen the free dance from Europeans, but I wonder if that top three matched the top three in the U.S. ice dance. I somehow doubt they matched Meryl Davis & Charlie White anyway, but even the other two teams; all three were at another level. U.S. ice dance has become an incredible thing.
The European lady who I enjoyed watching the most was actually Sonia LaFuente, if only because I saw both her short and long program, they were both good, and she got really excited at breaking 50 and 100. What a Europeans for Spain, all in all. Fernandez wins them their first medal and it’s gold, and then they get a top ten in the ladies too.
Why were the French and Russian men at Europeans unable to count? The first not even maxing out their jumping passes, in Amodio’s case, and the latter doing too many! Though Voronov’s error is the sort that’s more understandable. And even with Kovtun finishing higher than Voronov, I’m sure his short program and much stupider Zayak error is just going to make the backlash against him being sent to Zagreb worse.
Watching most of the juvenile girls this morning, I could’ve sworn they’d been allowed vocals now, and I’d heard them in juvenile pairs at Sectionals, but none of the ones I saw before the stream broke and I switched to Euros did so; in fact most of them skated to cliche music choices. It really doesn’t change much, allowing them.
