After two weeks of waiting, my Call of the Netherdeep group got into Bazzoxan last night, where we did not run into any of our backstories, with the DM saying he wanted to keep to the module, but might still throw things in. Still, even if Schist's family doesn't show up, having brothers in the Aurora Watch very much influenced her behavior there. Starting, perhaps, when the introduction to Verin Theylss involved joining him and two guards in a fight against a bunch of oozy demonic things with mindfuckery abilities that ate the two guards really quickly, and at one point we feared we'd have to run for our lives and abandon Verin to his doom. I had to remind myself that while Schist would rather not do that, she wouldn't be against it as badly as I was! Thank the gods we had a druid with a fire spirit who could teleport the addled Taskhand away from the monsters, and plant growth spells that hindered their movements-and thus said mindfuckery abilities-and even helped kill them. They aren't kidding when they talk about how powerful druids are.
She got really pissed, though, when the other characters dismissed the guards as "meatshields." She ranted about them having family-and promptly got told by her fellow drow that when he'd been a Watch captain, he'd mostly commanded orphans! I don't know where that conversation would go if we ever happen to resume it.
Meanwhile, we have been hailed as heroes for saving Verin's life, and having choices of knowledgeable-and/or dodgy-people to talk to, and the DM has suggested to us we could even test our mettle against the local soldiers before we head into the caves. I don't know if we'll do it, and I suspect Schist wouldn't do very well against them, but it might still be nice.
