Something the Bells Hells campaign is driving home
They'd already made this point a time or two in earlier episodes, and one of the earlier quotes from the cast that really built up my respect for them was saying they were just fine with fans predicting their big reveals beforehand, that in fact, that meant they were doing something right. And last night, when we got hit with the two very widely predicted reveals (though I'm not sure Orym's quite counts, since Liam had been dropping the hints already), reinforced that a story doesn't have to be unpredictable to hit you hard, if it's a good one.
And honestly, the idea of Laudna being one of of the villagers hung from the Sun Tree wasn't one I entirely liked when I first heard it. It just seemed too obvious, too tied to that story, when you want Laudna's story to be her own. But by the time we had Marisha telling it, with Liam providing perfect heart-wrenching reactions, it didn't feel like it took anything away from Laudna anyway. She's still her very unique and delightful-scary self, with her own take on what happened to her, and that would never not be worth hearing.
And that wouldn't even be the strongest thing we'd get from Liam. We've been speculating about Orym's tragically killed husband for so long it actually felt unreal for a moment when Orym first spoke of him. But it was a reveal worth waiting for, completely with a detail maybe we didn't see coming (I'd seen speculation about Derrig being connected somehow, but not of him being Orym's father-in-law!), and the whole explanation of the tattoos was wonderfully romantic. Not that we'd expect anything different from Liam there, of course. We even got a bonus in the form of Chetney's reaction, especially good to see since it contrasted with the alpha male nonsense he'd been spouting earlier.
I heard of at least one movie theater going crazy during that scene, and I'm sure plenty reacted that way to Laudna's reveal as well. For the most part I'm not sorry to watch at home instead, but I am a little sorry to not get to react with a crowd. Still, there was the reactions of fellow fans to read online after I finished watching this morning. We could bask in these reveals for a while.
